You’re careful about the foods that you put into your bodies but what about the products that you put onto your skin? Around sixty per cent of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body, so it stands to reason that your make-up is just as important as your diet. This is just one of the reasons why natural and animal-friendly products have grown in popularity recently as we look to go back to basics with our cosmetics.

Natural cosmetics used to target people with skin conditions such as eczema, who needed products that were suitable for sensitive skin. This has extended recently to include people who want to know exactly what they are putting on their skin, and want to make sure that their cosmetics don’t contain potentially harmful chemicals.

There are lots of websites that offer natural skincare products. These are made from plants and herbs, essential oils and other natural ingredients. Natural Collection (http://www.naturalcollection.com/natural-shop/make-up.aspx) offers the Laver Natural Cosmetics range that is made from organic ingredients, and is free from synthetic colours and fragrances. This makes them perfect for sensitive skin, as well as anyone who wants to avoid the many chemicals that are added to most cosmetics to make them last longer. They are not tested on animals. They tend to be more expensive than other make-up ranges. For example, a lip-gloss costs £6.95, but for this price, you are guaranteed the piece of mind of knowing that the items are made entirely made natural products .

The Natural Skincare Company http://www.thenaturalskincarecompany.co.uk) sell chemical free cosmetics in the form of the Paul Panders Natural Cosmetics range. They have removed the petroleum-based FD and C pigments from their products. The only added ingredients are Vitamin E to soothe the skin, and plant oils. As with Natural Collection, the items are quite expensive - an eye pencil costs £14.50. Items are only available to buy online.

Spirit of Nature (http://www.spiritofnature.co.uk) is another website offering organic cosmetics. Like Natural Collection, they also sell Laver Natural Cosmetics, plus the Santee Natural cosmetics range. These are all free from synthetic fragrances, preservatives and other chemicals. They are not tested on animals, and are recommended if you have sensitive skin.

Buy Organics (http://www.buyorganics.co.uk) sell foundation, blusher, eye shadow, mascara and lipstick. As the name suggests, all items are made from organic materials.

Green People (http://www.greenpeople.co.uk) offer lipsticks that protect and soothe your lips without the cochineal (crushed insects) that are added to most lipsticks. Their lip balms contain Vitamin E for extra nourishment.

When you consider the huge amount of chemicals that must be absorbed into your skin after using most cosmetics, it’s little wonder that more of us are turning to cosmetics that are made from natural and organic ingredients. There have so many horror stories in recent months linking certain chemicals and preservatives to cancer and other diseases. These days, sticking to natural cosmetics seems to be the only way to know what you’re really putting on your skin (and in your body as a direct consequence).
